It is an historical fact that the media bestow world changing significance to every noteworthy technological advance; if the reality always matched the hype we would all have domestic robots doing our vacuuming by now!
Cloud computing is one of the latest technologies that promises to revolutionise almost every aspect of computing and information technology. Indeed Cloud computing (even before the phrase was coined) has been responsible for virtually eliminating the use of physical media to distribute business software over the last few years.
The potential for Cloud computing is based on the vast economies of scale that are offered by data centres. In simple terms, the per-unit costs of owning several hundred thousand servers is infinitesimal compared to the per-unit cost of owning one or two servers. So as with all things, the commercial world will converge on the most economically efficient delivery method and the Cloud will inevitably change the way we all interact with IT!
