Apprentice to IT Technician - How Shackleton Technologies recruitment is helping people progress their IT careers - Scotland

From ‘The Apprentice’ to IT Technician

Shacktech - Shackleton Technologies Remote Desktop Support - Your Trusted IT Partner - IT company Dundee, Fife

Written by Shackleton Technologies

In joining Shackleton, Morgan is now part of a focused team of IT industry professionals supporting approximately 100 commercial clients who all have different systems, disparate hardware and a reliance on their technology. Working on a busy service desk like Shackleton’s is one of the fastest possible learning arenas for any IT engineer due to exposure to such a vast range of technologies, but Morgan knows he has the support of more experienced members in the team to call upon as and when required.

With 2018 being the Year of Young People, we wanted to give Morgan a platform to highlight his role at Shackleton – but notably for us all to get to know more about him

1. Morgan, what gets you out of bed in the morning?

My Alarm Clock.

2. Why a job in the IT industry?

It’s strange, I didn’t enjoy Computer Science at school because the focus was on coding which didn’t interest me quite as much as building computers. I like to work out how things are put together.  I thought about following my Grandad’s profession as a Senior Engineer in the oil industry but building computers was more my thing.

3. What has been your biggest achievement?

It would have to be getting my first ‘real’ job at Shackleton.

4. How would you describe your role at Shackleton?

I work within the Service Desk team supporting IT users from a variety of businesses and organisations. The support requests could be for something as simple as a password reset to server administration.

5. If you could switch jobs with anyone in the world, who would it be?

Bear Grylls – (He is also a keynote speaker at DattoCon18 in Barcelona this month which is a big IT event and some of my colleagues will get the chance to see the man in person).

6. Who would be your perfect dinner date (dead or alive)?

Gordon Ramsay.

7. What’s the most recent app you’ve downloaded?

The Bank of Scotland Banking App (boring but practical)!

8. What is the best advice you have ever received and who was it from?

My Grandad is very good at giving advice about life in general.

9. If you were stuck in a lift, who would you like to be stuck with?

Kevin Bridges, as it would have to be someone that makes me laugh.

10. Who are your favourite band?

Coldplay – I would really like to see them in concert.

11. Favourite food?

Coldplay – I would really like to see them in concert.

12. Favourite place?

Florida – I have been there several times with my family.

13. Favourite film?

Scary Movie 2

14. If money was no object, what would you like to be doing in 5 years’ time?

I would love to own a supercar dealership.

15. What changes would you make if you were MD?

I would order pizza every Friday for the team.

16. What would be your advice to any new recruits to Shackleton?

Everyone is very welcoming!

Morgan Rourke, IT Technician

“Morgan has been an excellent addition to our team and has proved an asset from day one.  His determination to continually learn new things, develop his skills and progress in the company is a tremendous thing to see.  It’s hard to believe he’s only been here 3 months and we wonder what we ever did without him.”

Chris Thornton, Senior Technical Manager
