If you’d said a few years ago that I’d be creating “agents”, I’d have imagined sunglasses, code names, secret missions with a bit of a ‘007’ vibe. But Copilot Agents aren’t the spy kind, they’re far more practical and a lot less dramatic.
And here’s the wonderful thing: absolutely anyone can make their own agent – no technical know-how or special skills needed. It’s designed for everyone, so you can jump right in and start creating.
I’m 100% proof, I built my first agent simply by chatting to Copilot and telling it what I needed.
Imagine a Copilot Agent as an approachable virtual assistant designed to help you or your team. It lives inside Copilot Chat and is always on hand when you need answers, guidance or help with everyday tasks.
Today, agents are smarter and more helpful than ever! The new generation of agents are:
Smarter
They understand your work, your documents, your emails and the type of tasks you deal with every day.
Helpful across your apps
Agents can support you in Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint, but you create and chat to them right inside Copilot Chat.
Easy to create
You simply tell Copilot what you want the agent to do. No technical steps. No setups. No jargon.
It feels much more like training a colleague than building a tool.

Answers everyday questions like:
“How do I book annual leave?”
“Where do I update my personal details?”
“Who should I contact if I have a payroll query?”

Inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Agent Mode steps in, supporting you as you work. Instead of waiting until you’re finished, it jumps in early to make things easier.
Here’s what it can do for you and where it really shines:
You’re always in control! Agent Mode simply smooths out the rough edges and saves you from doing the fiddly bits yourself.
The easiest way to create an agent is directly in Copilot Chat.
That’s genuinely it! If you can describe a task in your own words, you can create an agent to help with it.
Most of us won’t need this, but if you like building things or want your agent to handle more steps, Copilot Studio lets you take things further.
It’s still designed for nontechnical users, but it gives you more control and lets you add extra options, actions and steps.
✔️ Think of Copilot Chat as the “quick and easy” option.
✔️ Copilot Studio is the “I want a bit more power” option when you’re ready.
The good news is that you don’t need special dashboards or reports to figure this out. Most of the signs show up naturally in your day-to-day work. Here are a few simple ways to tell your agent is making a real difference:

If you catch yourself asking your agent things regularly, even small things – that’s a clear sign it’s becoming genuinely useful.

Create a simple agent in Copilot Chat that answer FAQs, or helps with a task you repeat daily, or keeps track of information you always look up.
Your first agent doesn’t need to change the world. It just needs to help you, and it will.
